These are in my own particular order according to groups/series of reels and/or model numbers, not production dates. The list is not exhaustive, as not all the modern post 80's reels interest me. This may not suit the true purist who has managed to collect all models and needs to see them in production time sequence. I am not a student of serial numbers and batches. Shimomura & Skupien are the places to go to study this.
At this point in time these will be the various examples of the 9 broad groups of A.B.Urfabriken reel models that I have collected or am very interested in collecting. With more resources available in future, I may be able to expand range and approach.
I will photograph and link all as time permits . Presently I have a sampling of about 170 reels from all 9 categories. More as time and finance permits. Many of these rarer reel images are greatfully accepted, appreciated and permitted to share courtesy of my good friend Mr Effe Edfuhr of Sweden.
I think I must eventually make a page here where our favourite long time and perhaps battle scarred reels are featured. Perhaps you may like to submit an image here.
A 10th style or model is the Combo rod/reel Tournament caster which is very rare.
One of my friends in USA, has over 400 Ambassadeurs alone and as he moved into the digital computer age, I am hopeful his analog database of reel details will be moved to an electronic form which he will share here with our huge network of ABU fans.
Very hard to keep this all up to date but I have over 300 different ABU reels now from the 9 types!
The Tournament Caster still eludes me, I would love to hear from you if you have one for sale or trade.

One day in my collection! |
LEFT All nine size Ambassadeurs except the 4500. Vintage early 90's Some sold with reproduction Cardinal 33 24 kt Gold plated in Teak display case. Dream on .......... Many people only collect Mint/Boxed reels and to see and to handle these items in such condition must truly be delightful, "transporting" one to a time many decades earlier when attitudes toward quality at any cost was the primary consideration rather than market share.
I personally have few in this pristine condition, due to their high purchase cost. To quote the last words of our famous bushranger Ned Kelly, "Such is Life" ; but so long as the reel is a complete and fully working example of the marque, then I also can be "transported" in time, imagining the titanic battles some of these reels would have contended with during their lifetime. |
