Significant ABU Friends

Robert Axelsson: Self-confessed ABU nut

I have only known Robert for a short while but have discovered he is a man of many facets!

Not only does he like to take a few balanced ABU outfits with him fishing like me...

but most  recently he shows me his current passion for ABU with his boat pictures but the history goes back like me , 4 decades and more.

His link above shows his professional career, but most interestingly he was intimately involved with the invention of the Anti backlash Ambassadeur.

Pictures to follow but to be especially featured on the new Models page!

Robert thinks he is in heaven on the water with his rig and ABU equipment!

Below he is at work and play (possibly retrieving a favourite lure!)

I quote from his e-mails

Hallo Wayne

If you take a look at the patent for this reel you will find my name as inventor.

I am an Ambassadeur freak, and have been so for over 40 years, and in my boat the Swedish name “haspel” is an expletive. That is why I 1996 invented the anti backlash reel, to make it easy for young guys to start with an ambassaduer. Then I went down to Svängsta and ask Patriks predecessor if this could bee interesting. We went out doors, and I caste the rubber drip strait in to the factory wall, from about 5 meter and the reel did not get any bird nest! Done, then I start working together with one of their engineers Roger Ylikangas (with Patrik in the background) me as a consultant. We made 13 different mechanical models in three months before they picked one of the solutions and started produce. That is today the second generation that Patrik has made much better then the first generation AB reel:

. At that time I also learned to know Patrik and we have stayed in contact sins then, he is a really good lad, and extremely good R&D Manager, I love discussing technical solutions with him. I have also had the honour of test fishing the MGX this summer! That is a supreme reel! They have a bestseller there.

In my boat you will find ABU reels that I am quite alone of in Sweden, or what do you say about the whole ambassaduer series numbered in gold well used, and much, much more.

PS: We do have the same favourite: 2500C

Hallo Wayne

I send you some more pictures so you can see who I am.

1. Me and my first Nile perch in Africa. (Hat decoration of course) Biggest was 33 kilo, but I had one on over 50 kilo, but my Conolon 12 feet rod, with my golden 10000 C was to weak to really hook it. I had been beach casting that’s way had the wrong equipment.

2. Some reels: Closest a normal STX, Black rod has a 2500C in gold not in picture, but I have to tell YOU that, Revo Toro, 2 Mörrum 1600 in RED try to buy that if you can, 2 blue Mörrum 3600 and 1600, Aurora and Akasuki. (Underlined is not possible to buy in Sweden)

3. My home build spin fishing boat, it was an empty rowing boat when I bought it. This summer it was a big reportage in Fiske Feber (7 sides) that is a big fishing news paper in Nordic countrys, as the most advanced spin fishing boat in Sweden. There are a lot of nice functions, or what do you say about steering it with your behind so you have your hands free for fishing! Everything should be on place when you need it, without being in the way when you don’t use it, anchors with lines and so on. I can have 20 loaded rods in the boat, and they are not in the way when you are spin fishing, that was the hardest one of al solutions. (2 guys 10 rod each) As you surely know: A beat needs: the right line for the right reel to the perfect rod, everything else is out of question in my world. So that means you can use 10 different beats per person in my boat. Ha, ha as I said to you, I am a Freak. (Cap from Florida fishing)

4. This summer I installed 3 batteries, some electric stuff and the GPS motor from Minn Kota.

5. As you see a perfect place for the captain, even with a glass of Whisky, normally for baits and tools.

6. Bum steering!

7. Ready to launch

8. Well come any time for a fishing trip in Sweden, I’ll be your captain.

9. We do have some…..

10. Fun

PS: In June I was fishing with the MGX, nice with friends like Patrik!!!!

I look forward to meeting and fishing with you one day Robert, in Sweden or out here
