The purpose of this link to Roger's Australian book is two-fold, ie to encourage you to seek out this book at auction and enjoy, as well as help you draw the same conclusions as I have, that the business of selling lures in a foreign market like Australia in the 50's 60's was a very difficult task unless the lures were effective and cheap.
Sadly because they were imported, prices were at a premium with taxes/duties common in the era.
The fact that so many choices were available by local manufacturers like, Southam, Gillies, Edwards, Graham,Sevenstrad, Wallace-Mitchell, Jarvis Walker, Halco, Derwent, and Todd as well as importers of lures from Asia and USA, would have made it very difficult for ABU to sell its product UNLESS they were quite outstanding.
The fact that they did prevail in spite of much competition and expensive pricing, show how good the lures were.
The range of ABU we were exposed to, was quite limited due to the afore mentioned reasons, but the cream of the crop were without doubt, my favourites , the ABU Hi-Lo, ABU Killer, ABU Toby, ABU Egon, ABU Krill, ABU Reflex, ABU Koster, ABU Salar, ABU Shiner to name a few. The first 3 were lures that as a young teenager, I worked hard earning pocket money to pay for each of these $1 to $2 dollar beauties nearly 50 years ago.
Search for them below, amongst the huge line-up of competing lures.
